| Refinishing an existing floor or finishing a new floor
involves some preparation such as
masking to prevent
dust infiltration. |
| Older floors should be
scraped to remove
all carpet tack strips, staples and nails. |
| When preparing an existing floor for refinishing, the
edges require special
attension. Since this is where tack strips were located, it is important to
inspect these areas closely. |
| Door ways sould be
masked to prevent dust infiltration. |
| Sanding is done with
a drum or belt sander. Be very careful not to create divets. Start with 40 grit
and finish with 80 grit. |
| Edgers are used to
get close to the walls. The edgers are carefully worked in a circular
motion. |
After each sanding, it is important to
vacuum. Dust is
easily contained if you:
- Mask effectively
- Use equipment with good dust control
- Vacuum after each sanding
|
| Old and New floors require some
filling. One gal.
of filler covers approximately 500 sq. ft. of floor. |
| The
filler is pushed into
the wood with a mud knife. The excess is scraped off. Fillers should dry
1-2 hours before sanding. |
| Filled Floors are
sanded with 80 grit. |
| The next step after vacuuming is finishing. It is important
to check all areas
for dust and debris. |
The floor
finish can be
applied by brush, squeegee or sprayer.
The benefits of
spraying:
- Even and consistent film
- No buildup at directional changes
- Less application time
- Smoother finish
- Better Control

Within 2 hours, the first coat is dry!
Screening is done
with a buffer and 120 grit screen.
Buffers can be a little
tricky to operate. Screening is done from side-to-side. Corners are sanded
by hand. |
After the
first coat is
screened and vacumed, the second coat can be applied. The second coat will be
dry within 2 hours. If a third coat is desired, screening is not necessary.
Contaminates are removed by hand brushing, vacuuming and applying as before.
Two or three coats can be applied in one day! No lingering toxic odor.
Can be walked on within two hours. |
